Jeremy Benson

Jeremy Benson tells lies, writes stories, and invents objects that already exist. Jeremy has profiled entrepreneurs, sculptors, novelists, taxidermists, brewers, musicians, and carvers as a freelance writer, contributing frequently to Great Lakes Bay Regional Lifestyle Magazine, and as Editor-in-chief of 360MainStreet.com. His book reviews have been found in H_NGM_N, the Collagist, the Brooklyn Rail, and at Newpages.com, where he also served as Editor of Literary Magazine Reviews. Jeremy’s poems and short stories have found homes in Spittoon, Dead Flowers, and Inner Art Journal; others have been distributed as collections of poetry and art designed around a single theme. Jeremy endeavors to cultivate a rich community of writers, readers, and artists, whether as a participant, patron, or planner. He has emceed open mics, curated readings, hosted craft-ins, and led workshops. He is an organizer of the Broken Nose Collective, an annual exchange of hand-made chapbooks. Jeremy Benson lives in Napa, where he farms organic vegetables.

Mara Adelman

Mara Adelman is a retired college professor who is passionate about art. She raises funds for refugees in Greece through the sale and teaching of jewelry (see earringsforpeace.com). She was recently highlighted for her art in Napa Valley Life (see mara4art.com). She transfers her whimsical drawings to ceramics and was a selected artist for the Napa Library card. Her ceramic tiles of this card hangs in the Children’s Library. After 18 years of world travel she transferred her various collections of trinkets, beads, and coins into “found object jewelry.” Her passion is teaching children and adults about jewelry, ceramic drawing, and mosaics. She hopes to do more public art and introduce artists to new mediums for their work. Mara resides in Napa.

Sarah Ammons

I create drawings and paintings in my studio in Healdsburg. I have generally two bodies of work on the go, one of them being my botanical illustrations, working with gouache on handmade cotton print making paper. These are sweet and meditative little works often framed to expose the tactile quality of the paper’s edges. Another body of work includes my figurative drawings and paintings in Gouache and oil on paper as well as muslin cotton. These work combine pattern, figure and object to create a sense of narrative that asks the viewer to fill in the gaps. Influenced by textile art, Lacanian psychoanalysis, Viennese expressionism, and mid-century illustration, I create scenes that ask the viewer to assess the social situation before them, as if walking into a party not knowing any of the guests. As the viewer reads the painting they cannot help but look within themselves to give the painting meaning-reading into body language, objects, and other signifiers within the scene. In addition to my own artwork, I illustrate for children’s books, design wine labels, take commissions for all kinds of projects, and teach drawing at the San Francisco Art Institute, where I earned my MFA. Lance Burris

I am a fifth generation Northern Californian with deep family roots in Sonoma and Napa Counties. I currently live in Napa where I work full-time as a writer and a painter. This background is relevant because much of my work draws upon my personal experience of the area and therefore is from a local perspective. While I have written and illustrated a number of books, the one titled “THE MAN IN THE HAT, the Poetic Spirit at Work in Poetry, Painting, and Prose” provides ample material for presentation purposes, either in the form of painting exhibitions or as performance art. As the subtitle indicates, the book contains a selection of all three art forms. It includes essays on the art of poetry writing and painting, memoirs, and allegories. It also includes place settings which capture the historical and cultural spirit of unique places in Sonoma and Napa Counties. Titles include “The Burning of Wolf House,” “When the Big Band Plays Rio Nido,” “Luna, Luna, Vella Moon,” and “The Ghost Dancers of Little Switzerland.” My annotated painting collection is available on loan. I am available to provide related commentary, readings, and poetry recitations in one to two hour long presentations. I have also written and illustrated a book on three Ray Bradbury classics which include commentary and forty-eight paintings suitable for exhibition and presentation purposes that might of interest to the schools where the books are often assigned reading.

Jermaine Burse

Jermaine Dante’ Burse is a prolific self taught artist who began drawing impressive black & white sketches on almost any surface he could find when he was three years old. Gradually the sketches of cartoon characters, super heroes and abstracts became more sophisticated and intricate as Jermaine added shading and color to his work. Jermaine began to study art of the great master’s as well as the art of 20th century artists, DuChamp, Picasso, Jean Michele Basqiuat and pop artist Andy Warhol. “Everything you can imagine is real,” wrote Pablo Picasso and Jermaine’s work is the epitome of that philosophy. Over the past 5 years, his art has evolved to a spontaneous realism genre that can not be easily categorized but it certainly recognized as a “Maine’ original with his depictions of figures such as NBA star Kevin Durant, Brand Ferrari, Marilyn Monroe and Stephen Curry. He is also a socially charged artist with a few series touching on topics such as Homelessness, No Middle Class, Health Care reform and going after your dreams. He also excepts commissioned art from clients who seek the “Maine” touch for portraits of their favorite icons, families and friends. Jermaine’s fine art work is on display at various San Francisco art shows, restaurants, tasting rooms, coffee shops, galleries and wineries. Jermaine is an active participant with Doctor’s without Borders & Build a Heart foundation, where he has helped raise tens of thousands of dollars.

Nick Cann

I like to draw. I have been drawing as long as I can remember. My interests are fantasy people and detailed architectural confections. I schooled at San Jose State, the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, and The Art Center in Los Angeles. During my years in L. A., I worked at M. G. M. Studios as a set illustrator, and in 1965 struck out on my own as a freelance designer, doing anything requiring drawing. I did set designs for television and credit designs for films, airplane bulkhead murals for Continental Airlines and murals for airports and department stores. Some of my commissions took me to Buffalo N. Y. for a Hyatt House and Chicago for the film festivals. I did spot illustrations for the London Times and album covers for Blossom Dearie. I hope to draw as long as my eyes and hands permit. Wedding invitations, posters, I welcome them all. If you like what you see, please contact me at my home/studio in Napa. Andrea RJ Cazares received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the American University of Rome in Italy where she studied religious iconography, art history and ancient methods of art making. Her work is influenced by antiquities and spiritual symbolism from multiple cultures which she combines into figurative and natural forms to narrate stories and create beauty. Andrea Cazares is also the Resident Artist at Nimbus Arts, the art center in St Helena where she leads inventive classes for both children and adults. She brings 12 years of fine art experience in painting, drawing, printmaking, clay sculpting, sewing, and ceramic hand-painting, and has a wealth of knowledge regarding art materials and techniques. Every day she is full of gratitude for her job and career as an Artist.

My artwork is inspired by folk stories and songs, contemporary popular culture, and local flora and fauna. I choose subjects that reflect sadness and futility, while also finding the joy and beauty that makes life worth living and, ultimately, laughing at. As an artist I strive to create artwork that is alive and expresses the beauty and absurdity of everyday life. I am driven to reach out and connect through humor and emotions while tapping into my own past growing up in both small-town suburban California, as well as the rugged mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico. As a photographer, I photograph tropical and desert plants in Bay Area landscapes and urbanscapes. The focus on these plants provides a challenge and a contrast to the overly common images which seem to identify Napa and Sonoma counties. Professionally I am a museum educator and I strive to create opportunities for youth and the community to engage with art in unexpected ways.

Emily Freiman has called Napa Valley her home for over 25 years. She is a retired Art Therapist, past AANV- Art Association Napa Valley-President, past AANV newsletter editor, past NVW-Napa Valley Writers-board member, active published writer, past writing/artmaking course facilitator, and active visual artist, creating fine and applied arts. Her mediums are silk, oil, acrylic, and watercolor, pen and ink. She enjoys hand painting silk scarves and other applied arts items, as well as representational and abstract canvas works. Four giclees of her “Hot Pink Fuchsia” watercolor hang in the historic Napa River Inn. I am a local artist in Vallejo and joined American Canyon Arts Foundation in 2019. I work in a multitude of mediums, both fine arts and crafts. My current emphasis is drawing, painting and illustration. I was born and raised in Marin County, attended Terra Linda High in San Rafael. Graduated from Fresno State University where I earned my BA in Art in 1975. I moved to Vallejo in 1978 and began a career in the USDA Forest Service, in 1979, where I was employed for 31 years. I retired from my position of Information Technical/Computer Specialist at the end of 2010. Upon retirement I began to reignite my interests in the outdoors and the influence which nature seeps into my depictions of the surrounding world. I think of myself as a bit of a scatter artist. I love all mediums. Although I work in many mediums, my special interests are in illustration, soft-sculpture, anything that is hand made and repurposed creations. I love to try new things and change directions at will. I always knew that art, drawing, creating, and observing the world around me were my first loves. When asked what I wanted to do when I grew up, I always answered, “I want to be an artist!”. (I also wanted to be a giraffe!) I am still growing up, discovering and rediscovering the directions, styles, creative processes, and wonders that I want my art to say.

Ann Nunziata

I am self-taught, concentrating on art after a career in R&D at Apple Computer. Formerly trained as an electrical engineer, I received my graduate and post-graduate degrees from Stanford University. I am currently working in watercolor, as well as art-related website design. My husband and I enjoy outdoor adventure- camping, motorcycling through Europe and sailing our boat off the eastern and western coasts of North American. Along the way, I cannot avoid the realization that mankind has severely impacted many of our beloved places and wildlife. My artwork currently focuses on bringing these endangered species and places to the awareness of others. I relate to Frida Kahlo who once said “I paint flowers so they will not die”. Conservationists have learned that people will save what they love. I hope that my artwork will inspire others to consider their impact on the environment before it is too late to save it. I have not abandoned my technical training. It was no mistake that I was attracted to the creative technology of Apple Computer trained as an engineer fresh out of Stanford University. Now I can focus what I learned about the technology of color on my evolving images. Borrowing from the words of Wolf Kahn, I hope viewers of my art will embark on a journey of both enlightenment and pleasure. I am a member of the California Watercolor Association, Art Association Napa Valley, Napa-Solano Audubon Society, and Napa Land Trust.
