Eric Sabee is best known for his unique use of Scratchboard, a relatively modern medium consisting of a white clay ground on a board backing. Color is applied and then scratched off using a sharp tool, exposing the white clay underneath. Utilizing this medium Sabee evokes detailed characters and environments by “carving out the light”. Highly influenced by comic books and imported animation, Sabee combines traditional techniques with modern themes injecting his own personality, style, with an underlying humor. The result is an idiosyncratic representation of the world celebrating the strange and peculiar.
