Orchard Valley Ceramic Arts Guild Workshops present, Christa Assad: Cut and Construct

Ceramics Workshop, September 22nd, 2012

Orchard Valley Ceramic Arts Guild is sponsoring a Christa Assad workshop on Saturday, September 22nd, 2012 which will be held at Higher Fire Studio in downtown San Jose.

With an emphasis on formal composition and craft, Christa will demonstrate using the wheel as a tool to generate “building blocks” — simple forms that are later cut up and reassembled using a stiff slab construction method. She will discuss geometry, structure, ritual design, and earning a living from making pots. Both functional and sculptural concerns will be addressed.

Demonstrations include:

Wedging
Centering
Throwing basic to advanced forms
Altering pots on the wheel
Trimming
Cutting and assembling thrown and/or hand-built forms
Basic Hand-building
Pulling handles on and off the piece
Lids and covered forms
Spouts/ teapot accessories
Stacking forms to build larger pieces
Combining wheel-thrown and hand-built parts
Based in Berkeley, California, mid-career artist Christa Assad is best known form her “Re-objectification series teapot designs based on objects and buildings from American industry.

The workshop will run from 10:00am to 4:00pm on Saturday, September 22nd. There is a maximum of 40 people for the one-day workshop. Registration is NOW OPEN. Link to more information and to register:  http://www.ovcag.org/cgi-bin/DJcalendar.cgi?T=workshop-detail.html&EVENTNO=00073
