A nonstop ringing cell phone in a café, a woman at the next table who takes a chance and answers it, and a dead man with a dodgy past, propel the play in motion. It is one woman’s journey to face her expectations about decency, redemption and the need to connect in a technologically fanatical world.
Director’s Statement
We end our season with Dead Man’s Cell Phone by Sarah Ruhl. This surreal fantasy is peopled with quirky characters who cavort in and out of bizarre situations. Themes that run through the play are taken from the quote in Charles Dickens’ Tale of Two Cities, “Each human being is a book full of surprises destined to be left unfinished.” Dead Man’s Cell Phone is an intense, darkly mesmerizing tale that illustrates how a device we have come to depend on can be used to both unite and isolate.
