Lucky Penny Productions announces auditions for Xanadu Jr. – A musical for actors aged 8-18 years old.

January 17-26, 2020
Directed by Taylor Bartolucci and Barry Martin
Music Direction by Berkeley Rousseau – Choreography by Alise Guzik

Xanadu JR. is inspired by the Universal Pictures’ cult classic movie that starred Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly, and follows the journey of a magical and beautiful Greek muse, Kira, who descends from the heavens of Mt. Olympus to Venice Beach, California, on a quest to inspire a struggling artist, Sonny, to achieve the greatest artistic creation of all time – the first Roller Disco. (Hey, it’s 1980!) But, when Kira falls into forbidden love with the mortal Sonny, her jealous sisters take advantage of the situation, and chaos abounds.

Performance dates are January 17- 26, 2020. (January 17, 18, 23, 24, 25 @ 7:00 pm, 19th and 26th at 2:00 pm.) Rehearsals will begin approximately December 8th. Rehearsals are typically Sunday-Thursday evenings, some Saturday and Sunday daytimes. There will be a break for the holidays from December 23rd -January 3rd. A full draft rehearsal schedule will be available at auditions.

*All participation in Lucky Penny Youth Productions is free of charge to the participating actors. There are no registration or participation fees. We do offer small stipends to our actors for their participation in our productions to compensate them for being a working actor.*

Auditions will be held Saturday, August 10th at the Lucky Penny Community Arts Center, 1758 Industrial Way #208, Napa, CA. Callbacks are scheduled for the following Saturday, August 17th.

To audition, please sign up for an audition group.  We will be seeing 22 auditioners at a time.  Everyone will sing one of the four selected audition songs, then we will have a short dance call.  Please select one song to prepare from the following options:  Magic, Evil Woman, All Over the World, Don’t Walk Away.

We are seeking to cast a diverse group of actors aged 8-18 for the following roles:

Sonny Malone – the young male lead from the beaches of California. He is wide-eyed, full of dreams and can be a bit sensitive; after all, he is an artist! While Sonny may not be the brightest, he is very sincere and earnest. Very strong male singer and actor with a great sense of comedic timing.

Kira – the Greek heroine and loveable, young ingénue. She begins the play as Clio, the youngest and the most idealistic of the Muses. With the addition of leg warmers and an Australian accent, she quickly becomes Kira to help Sonny realize his dreams. She is ambitious, smart and like Sonny, pure of heart. Strong, experienced performer who can act, move well and has a good comedic timing.

Danny Maguire – a real estate magnate and owner of the Xanadu theater. He evolves from being guarded about protecting the theater to becoming partners with Sonny and then betraying him. Comedic actor and experienced singer.

The Andrews Sisters (Maxene, Patty and Laverne) – an exact duplicate of the Andrews Sisters that were famous in the 1940s. Needing three actresses who are proficient musicians and who complement one another well.

Melpomene – the Muse of Tragedy. She is the eldest of the Muses and is most responsible for plotting against Kira. Has a little bit of a sassy, evil streak.  Strong singer and actoress.

Calliope – the Muse of Epics. She is Melpomene’s “Wing-Muse.” She is equally devious and listens closely to her sister’s direction. Strong singer and actress and should be a perfect complement to Melpomene.

Erato, Euterpe, Polyhymnia, Terpischore, Thalia and Urania – the muses. Each Muse embodies their specific role (i.e. Thalia, Muse of Comedy should have a comedic knack). Featured roles for performers with strong voices and lots of creativity.

Zeus – the King of the Gods.  Must have a big presence, and a booming voice.

Hera – Zeus’ wife and is known for her comparable status to her husband. Actress with grand stature and power. Zeus and Hera should complement one another as the most powerful duo in Greek mythology.

Hermes – the god of trade, trickery, travel and more. The most clever and mischievous god. This is a hilarious cameo role for a performer with excellent comedic skills.

Thetis – the Goddess of the Sea who tells the pivotal story of Achilles and his vulnerable heel, which in turn, changes Kira’s perspective about really loving Sonny. Strong actress.

Aphrodite – the Goddess of Love, sweet and demure in nature.

Melpomene’s Nine Alluring Daughters – great cameo roles. Molpe, Peisonoe, Thelxiepeia have solo lines.

Eros, Cyclops, Centaur, and Medusa, and the Greek Chorus.
