ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Aimee Suzara is a poet, playwright and performer based in Oakland, CA. Aimee’s mission is to create, and help others create, poetic and theatrical work about race, gender, and the body to provoke dialogue and social change. Suzara has graced stages and classrooms nationally with her poetry performances and presentations, from Florida to Washington. Her debut poetry book, SOUVENIR (WordTech Editions 2014) was lauded as “a powerful meditation on history and the legacies of race, family and identity,” (David Mura), and her poems appear in numerous collections, including Phat’itude and Kartika Review, 580 Split, Lantern Review, Walang Hiya: Literature Taking Risks Toward Liberatory Practice, Check the Rhyme: An Anthology of Female Poets and Emcees and chapbooks, CA Book Award-Nominated the space between and Finding the Bones. As a collaborator, she has worked with Amara Tabor Smith and Deep Waters Dance Theater and the SF State’s University Dance Theater. Her theatrical work has been supported by a YBCAway Award, National Endowment for the Arts, an East Bay Community Foundation commission; selected for the One Minute Play Festival, Playground, APAture, and Utah Arts Festival; and staged at the Berkeley Repertory Theater, CounterPULSE, and others. Suzara received her M.F.A. in Creative Writing at Mills College. Currently a member of the Playground SF Writer’s Pool, she has been a resident of Atlantic Center for the Arts and Hedgebrook. An advocate for the intersection of arts and literacy, she lectures at several colleges and universities including Las Positas College and CSU Monterey Bay and leads workshops in poetry and performance for youth and adults.
