Accompanist

PURPOSE STATEMENT
The job of Accompanist is done for the purpose/s of providing support to faculty in the learning and performance phases of choral and voice classes; rendering services in classroom and individual instruction; and providing keyboard accompaniment.

Essential Functions

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Accompanies voice for choral classes, music and theater, productions and soloists (e.g. records practice sessions, provides feedback, etc.) for the purpose of assisting faculty with student progress.
Analyzes assigned music prior to rehearsal and performances (e.g. correct tempos, challenging transitions, dynamics, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring efficient use of rehearsal time and performance schedules.
Assists faculty in supervising student activities for the purpose of ensuring efficient use of class time and maintaining a positive learning environment.
Assists the Choral Instructor (e.g. provides technical and/or academic support, problem solving, troubleshooting, etc.) for the purpose of training students in the art of accompaniment.
Coordinates general lab and support functions (e.g. clerical duties, music library maintenance, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring proper recordkeeping and information readily accessible to faculty and students.
Maintains equipment inventory (e.g. keyboards, pianos, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring instruments are available for class and performances in clean and good working condition.
Prepares and distributes lab and instructional materials (e.g. rehearsal tapes, assignments, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring proper tools are provided in support of student learning.
Rehearses with voice students (e.g. coach individual and groups, etc.) for the purpose of monitoring progress and assisting students in overcoming difficulties with rhythm, tempo, and interpretation of music to achieve desired outcomes.

Other Functions

Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the performances.

Skills, Knowledge And Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: piano playing; sight reading music; and working with large groups, solo vocal instrumentals and choral singers.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: established audition standards; voice ranges; key transpositions; and concepts of grammar, spelling and punctuation.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather and/or collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity ofindividuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; listening and identifying mistakes in music performances; working as part of a team;anddemonstrated sensitivity to an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic background of community college students.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of resources from other work units is often required to perform the job’s functions. There is some opportunity to impact the organization’s services.

Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 75% sitting, 10% walking, and 15% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

Experience

Three (3) years of job related experience within a specialized field.

Education

Community college and/or vocational school degree with study in job-related area.
