Napa Valley College Performing Arts Announces Auditions for  

“A Chorus Line” 

Napa Valley College (NVC) Performing Arts is accepting audition videos for its spring online production, “A Chorus Line.” The deadline to submit audition videos is Wednesday, January 20 at 11:59 p.m. 

The production will be live streamed on Friday, March 19, 2021 and co-directed by Jennifer King, NVC Theater Arts professor and artistic director, and Olivia Cowell, NVC Theater Arts adjunct instructor, with musical direction by Dr. Christina Howell, NVC Music Department music instructor. 

To submit an audition video, prepare no more than a one–minute excerpt of a musical theater song that showcases vocal range and personality. Send video link to MHamilton@napavalley.edu by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, January 20. 

The casting team is seeking performers who can bring 17 very different people to life through acting and song. As this is an online production, the focus will be on singing and acting, with dancing taking a less prominent role.    

Virtual rehearsals will begin on January 20, 2021, culminating with a live stream performance on Friday, March 19, 2021. For more information, visit PerformingArtsNapaValley.org.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS 

ZACH: The director and choreographer of the show. 

CASSIE: Returning to the chorus after years of being a featured performer.                                 

DIANA MORALES: Latin or Pacific Island descent. Streetwise Latinx from the Bronx, determined, sensitive. Strong singer. 

PAUL SAN MARCO: Latin or Pacific Island descent. Introverted, insecure, but strong dancer from Spanish Harlem, New York. Excellent actor.  

SHEILA: Oldest dancer on the line. Confident, brassy, sexy, bitchy, and always “on.” Sings the low harmony in “At the Ballet.”  

VAL: Sexy, sassy, suggestive and funny. A brazen, direct, attention-seeker from Vermont. 

MIKE: Determined, sure of himself, a sexy and likable flirt. 

AL: From the Bronx, streetwise, tough, macho, and married to Kristine. Strong singer.   

KRISTINE: Scatter-brained, insecure, awkward, anxious and hilarious. Married to Al. 

RICHIE: Enthusiastic, cool and funny. Likable and laid back. 

MAGGIE: A sweetheart, little sister type. Dreamer. Sings up to an E natural in “At the Ballet.” 

BEBE: Insecure about her looks and tries to be funny to cover her insecurities. Strong singer. 

CONNIE WONG: Energetic, feisty, born in Chinatown. Ideally no taller than 5 feet. 

LARRY/LARA: Zach’s assistant and dance captain, teaches and demonstrates the audition dances.  

DON: All-American ladies’ man, married and into cars, money and women.       

GREGORY: Sassy, bitchy queen. Smart, self-assured, very “East Side.” 

JUDY: Funny, gawky, nervous. Warm and hopeful. 

MARK: Uber-optimistic first timer, completely naïve but charming, all-American kid. 

BOBBY: Eccentric, funny and witty.  Very sharp-tongued attention seeker. From upstate New York. 

ENSEMBLE: All genders and ethnicities.
