Job Title: Program & Education Manager                                Updated: May 24, 2021

Reports to:  Associate Director & Curator of History                     Status: Full time, Exempt

Supervises: Education Coordinator                                               Some weekends and evenings required

Position Description:  The Program & Education Manager develops, implements, and manages all Museum public & education programs and group tours. This position supervises the Education Coordinator, and is responsible for researching, writing, and managing all program & education grants. This position requires working knowledge of State Common Core Standards and integrates these Standards into Museum education programs. This position works closely with Museum curators and staff to develop programs that are inclusive and support the organization’s mission.

Principle Duties & Responsibilities:

Public & Education Programs:

·       Develop, plan, and implement a vibrant and regular schedule of both virtual and in-person public and educational programs, including social events, tours, lectures, performances, panel discussions & film.

·       Collaborate with staff to ensure programs are inclusive and provide a welcoming environment for all visitors.

·       Work with the Executive Director, Associate Director & Curator of History, and Development Manager to identify and solicit grant and sponsorship funding in support of public & education programs.

·       Supervise Education Coordinator.

·       Collaborate with curators, artists, and outside advisors to design virtual and in-person programs that engage diverse audiences to enhance and/or supplement exhibition content.

·       Collect data and write reports that provide information for future program strategy.

·       Manage the Museum’s art education programs, including the Art4Kids grant supporting our 5th & 6th grade visual arts program. Art4Kids funds the costs of bringing the students to the museum, as well as funding teaching artists to provide in-person instruction at the school for hands-on art lessons following State Common Core Standards. The lessons are generally tied to a current exhibition.

·       Manage program & education professional service contracts with teaching artists, panelists, performers, vendors, and consultants.

·       Supervise and evaluate teaching artists’ performance through regular observations and provide direct feedback to them in a timely manner.

·       Responsible for ensuring all required program permits, licenses, contracts, insurance, and equipment are obtained for each program or event.

·       Work with Membership & Volunteer Coordinator to ensure program volunteers are recruited, trained, and scheduled sufficiently to support all programs.

·       Attend programs to facilitate the best experience for program participants and guests, and to provide a basis for evaluation of the program.

·       Provide Museum marketing staff with content, newsletter articles and images about programs with enough lead time to effectively market the event.

·       Serve as the main contact for program-related inquiries.

·       Participate in program related media interviews as needed.

Tour Program:

·       Manage tour program.

·       Schedule all tours.

·       Lead tours if needed.

·       Work with Membership & Volunteer Coordinator to ensure docents are recruited, well-trained, and scheduled sufficiently to support tours.

·       Prepare instructional materials for docents and teachers, including docent guides for major exhibitions.

·       Develop and facilitate trainings for museum docents.

·       Evaluate docent performance through regular observations and provide direct feedback to them in a timely manner.

·       Conduct surveys after tours and apply the feedback to future programs.

Office Administration:

·       Develop proposals for funding, including grants, foundation support, and sponsorships.

·       Supervise Education Coordinator and teaching artists.

·       Develop and manage the Program & Education Department budget.

·       Compile program attendance data for evaluation purposes, grant reporting and grant proposals.

·       Network with local artists, institutions, organizations, and community members.

·       Stay informed about public programs at other Bay Area Museums and occasionally attend their programs.

·       Provide front desk backup and Visitor Services support as needed for programs.

·       Update shared calendar with all scheduled Museum tours, trainings, events, and programs in a timely manner.

·       Register visitors for programs and events.

·       Perform other duties as required.

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree required. Minimum 3 years’ experience in a similar position required. Knowledge of Museum & Art Education theory preferred. Event planning experience preferred. Knowledge of the Bay Area Region and Sonoma County schools preferred. Demonstrated enthusiastic interest in museum education preferred. Bilingual in Spanish preferred. Minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience preferred.

·       Ability to work with volunteers in a training and leadership capacity.

·       Ability to flex work hours to accommodate evening and weekend program scheduling.

·       Employment contingent upon a successful background check.

Physical Demands:

·       Sitting at desk for prolonged periods of time. Walking, standing, climbing stairs, hearing (telephone, at meetings, etc.), lifting/carrying (up to 35 pounds), climbing up and down ladders, lifting and retrieving materials, and reaching both above and below shoulder height.

Salary and Benefits:

Salary range is $54,080 to $58,240 per year. Full time Museum employees are eligible for medical, dental, FSA, vacation and sick leave as outlined in the Employee Handbook. Museum staff members enjoy free admission to hundreds of museums around the country, free or discounted admission to all Museum events and programs, and discounts at the Museum gift shop.
